Deacons and elders in the United Methodist Church have equal status as clergy. Yet elders far outnumber deacons. Many elders do not understand the ministry of the deacon. The effectiveness of the deacon's ministry is often dependent on how effectively the elder, in ordering the life of a congregation, honors and includes the special ministry of the deacon.
When I entered into a ministry partnership with an elder (in a secondary appointment), my ministry as a deacon in a congregation became both more fulfilling and more challenging.
One area of concern for United Methodist deacons is that although we are ordained, we do not preside over communion. However, we are required to assist at communion. Elders' devaluing of the "assisting" role disrespects deacons. But the elder who values the deacon as an equal partner in ministry, and who submits her/himself to the deacon's gifts and calling, makes sure that the deacon's role in the sacraments is genuinely meaningful.
